Statement of Purpose

What is a Statement of Purpose?

While applying to the universities in the USA the students are required to submit the Statement of Purpose. The Statement of Purpose is an essay stating the purpose of applying to a particular graduate program in a particular university.

A statement of purpose tells the admissions committee more about you as an applicant. It is a tool for the Admissions Committees to assess the knowledge, experience, motivation, intellectual maturity and readiness of applicants to pursue education at their institution.

The Statement of Purpose is a document that complements your resume, transcripts  and application form, describing your professional background, experience, abilities, goals and research interests in a narrative way and convincing the Admission Committee that you would be a good match for a particular department or program.

Why Statement of Purpose is Important?

The Statement of Purpose is a crucial component of the university admissions process. The Admissions Committees are trying to determine if you will be a successful student in their department and a successful scientist after you graduate. They are interested in your qualifications as a researcher, your career goals, and how your personality matches their goals and department.

The Admissions Committees probably reads hundreds of applications every year. Well-written statement of purpose is your chance to convince Admissions Committees to figure out that you are a good fit for their program and university.

Also, some universities require a Statement of Purpose for Scholarship Programs to which a student might be eligible for. In this specific Statement of Purpose students need to focus on their unique valuable features – experiences, skills, etc. – that might differ from other applicants and increase their chances to be more deserved candidates for the possible scholarships offered by universities/departments.

In summary, SOP is one of the most important pieces of your university (graduate) application because it:

  • Gives the Admission Committee an understanding of your academic background and interests
  • Allows you to illustrate in your own words what sets you apart from other applicants
  • Helps them determine if you are a good match for the program and/or scholarship to which you are applying
  • Shows your communication style and ability

What is the General Format of Statement of Purpose?

Each university might have their own standards/questions in writing the Statement of Purpose. The general form usually includes the following elements:

  • Professional Narrative (intro about person, goals, motivation, reason to apply)
  • Previous Experiences
